Modernisation, Fiveways Croydon

Red Wilson Associates deliver the modernisation designs and manage their build on behalf of the three TCMS2 signal contractors working with TfL. The modernisation at Fiveways is one of the 37 sites that we managed the build of in the year 2020/2021. RWA designed, programmed and implemented the modernisation of the traffic signals at Fiveways in Croydon. Using our in-depth knowledge, we worked collaboratively with the local highway authorities and a variety of stakeholders to offer a seamless service.

Following the approval of the modernisation design at Fiveways, a 12 week build programme was devised that strived to minimise disruption to the network whilst ensuring a safe and efficient working practice. This included reviewing the SRL temporary traffic signal layout and obtaining permits to carry out the works. Permits to deploy the temporary signals and to undertake the modernisation were obtained by communicating with both Croydon and TfL as the local highway authorities.

Working collaboratively with LTraffic, who are the signals and civils contractor for telent, a programme was devised and traffic management plans produced bespoke to the junction and the required works. For example due to the high volume of general traffic, pedestrians and buses, all works were undertaken over night to ensure the safety of the road-users. We ensured that all stakeholders including residents were aware of this prior to work commencing.

Throughout the build programme we acted as a single point of contact working to coordinate all the activities. We managed the project through the entirety of it’s life cycle right up to the commissioning before ensuring a seamless handover to maintenance.
