Thakenham

RWA were commissioned in 2019 on behalf of West Sussex County Council to carry out the detailed highway and traffic signal design forming part of a road safety scheme in Thakenham. West Sussex County Council identified a need to upgrade an existing mini roundabout to a fully signalised junction with pedestrian facilities.

Following a review of the preliminary design

, using a topographical survey and RSA Stage 1 RWA assessed the design. A horizontal alignment design was initially completed, and an additional diagonal crossing was incorporated. It was felt that this additional crossing would supplement the originally proposed crossing points on the north and east of the junction providing a better pedestrian route on the desire line from a local school to residential areas to the north west of the site.

Once this final alignment was agreed with the Council, we proceeded to complete a full set of drawings including traffic signal design (with MOVA), and horizontal and vertical setting out information. We worked collaboratively with the council, local community groups, and equipment manufactures to ensure the pedestrian provisions for the best supported vulnerable road users.

The final design package alongside independently commissioned RSA Stage 2 with designers’ responses were submitted to the Council. The scheme completed construction in early 2020.
