The Heathway

RWA produced a feasibility proposal to London Borough of Barking and Dagenham that transforms The Heathway by Dagenham Heathway station. The proposal provides segregated facilities for cyclists to encourage modal shift along the corridor. This forms part of the borough’s transformational ambition to become the green capital of London.

In 2020, working alongside BeFirst, RWA were commissioned to conduct a modal study of The Heathway corridor to identify how it is currently used. Understanding how the corridor was operating helped to identify opportunities to deliver the borough’s vision and remove barriers to walking and cycling. Modelling was undertaken to demonstrate what would be the impact of the proposal. We designed the scheme in a way to assess its buildability whilst minimising any necessary impact.

The proposal transformed the streetscape for cyclists and pedestrians by providing a segregated cycle track, Copenhagen style crossings and bus stop bypasses. We ensured the design was in line with the borough’s ambitions to reduce car dependency and promote more sustainable modes of transport. The aspirations to transform the streetscape of the corridor have been built into Barking and Dagenham’s future objectives.
