To improve safety for all road users whilst overcoming the constraints of a narrow corridor, we made use of new traffic signal techniques such as low-level signals, cycle early release, pedestrian countdown, and enlarged advanced stop lines. We also reduced conflict by clarifying lane designations and providing more space between vulnerable road users and vehicles.
All of these measures and their impacts were assessed in a LinSig model to ensure the impact on capacity was negligible and could be justified by the improvements to road safety. RWA organised and responded to the road safety audits and undertook the detailed designs that were used for the construction of the scheme. Cyclists are now awarded with a suite of facilities allowing them to safely navigate the corridor. The scheme has transformed the corridor to put the safety of road users at the forefront of it’s priorities.
